When the Fort Hays State University football team suits up for its first fall scrimmage this morning, the players won't be treating it like another practice. Scrimmages are one of the few times, prior to the season starting, where the coaching staff can have the athletes go full speed with an audience watching, making it the best method to make final decisions on who will suit up come game day.

"Sunday will be a time to show if you can play or not," said junior linebacker Justin McPhail. "It's a great evaluating tool for the coaches. As a player you have to go out whenever we scrimmage and really play well."

Today's scrimmage begins at 9 a.m. at Lewis Field Stadium. It is one of three scheduled scrimmages, the other two set to take place Thursday and Aug. 27. The Tigers will also host a meet and greet from 1 to 2:30 p.m. today at The Mall.

The team's first scrimmage is the final act of the team's first week of fall camp, which began Monday.
